The constant movement of industrial machine parts necessitates the use of electrical devices which would aid in carrying data and electrical signals between these machine parts. These devices, which are indispensable in the industrial field are what are termed Electrical Slip Rings. Slip rings are used in a wide variety of industrial systems and electrical machines across many industries because these systems’ rotating parts prevent cable connections to fixed power sources.

What is a Slip Ring?

A slip ring is an electrically operated device employed to carry data and power or electrical signals from an immobile structure to a revolving part.

What are Electrical Slip Rings made of?

An electrical slip ring typically consists of a stationary brush made of metal or graphite that strokes against the outside diameter of a rotating metal ring. Electric power or signal is transferred from the fixed brush to the metal ring, creating the connection, as the metal ring rotates. The other component rotates while the brushes or the rings are immobile.

Types of Slip Rings

There are many different types and sizes of slip rings depending on the use.

1.       Mercury-wetted

Mercury is noted for its high conductive rate, therefore, mercury-wetted slip rings provide stable data or electrical connection with very low resistance. These types of slip rings are designed such that the sliding brush makes contact with a pool of liquid metal that is molecularly bound to the contacts.

2.       Pancake slip rings

Concentric rings of conductors are stacked on a flat disc in a pancake slip ring with the rotating shaft in the middle. In contrast, a pancake slip ring offers a shorter axial length for the same number of circuits and might be appropriate in some situations.

3.       Wireless slip rings

The traditional metal and carbon brush contact friction-based mechanisms used by slip rings are not used by wireless slip rings. Instead, they use a magnetic field produced by the stationary transmitter and the coils housed inside the rotating receiver to communicate electrical signals wirelessly.

Since they don’t have the same revolving mechanical components as traditional slip rings, wireless slip rings are thought of as an improvement over — or an alternative to — traditional slip rings. This makes them more durable under challenging operating conditions and requires less upkeep. It is important to note that, The amount of data or electrical signal that can be transferred between coils in a wireless slip ring is limited.

Functions of Slip Rings

Slip rings are used to carry electrical signals and data from a stationary structure to a continuously or intermittently rotating structure.

Importance of Slip Rings

The industrial world is constantly in motion. Data-driven automation, data transfer, video cameras, screens, crane technology, medical technology, maritime technology, military, and stage technology make use of electrical slip rings. Without the transfer of electricity and data on continuous, unrestricted, or intermittent rotation, none of these industries would be able to operate.

This makes it impossible to overlook the benefits derived from the functions of an electrical slip ring in modern-day work. Here are some importance of electrical slip ring

·         making operation simpler

·         enhancing application performance

·         removing the possibility of damaging the wire between moveable parts

·         reducing the possibility of excessive power or data loss

·         improves the overall effectiveness of machines
