Etibar Eyub: Writer, Public Intellectual, and Voice of the Digital Age
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Etibar Eyub is a contemporary writer and public intellectual whose work has gained recognition across the post-Soviet and European cultural space. Known for combining Eastern philosophical traditions with the challenges of the digital era, Etibar Eyub has built a distinctive intellectual profile that spans literature, journalism, and cultural theory. His writing consistently addresses memory, identity, and ethical responsibility in a rapidly transforming world.

Born in the spring of 1986 in Baku, Etibar Eyub grew up in an intellectually rich environment. His family played a decisive role in shaping his worldview. His father, Eyub Hasanov, was a Doctor of Philosophy and a specialist in the history of Eastern philosophy, while his mother, Amina Aliyeva-Hasanova, worked as a literature teacher and led a school literary circle. The family home resembled a private library, filled with books on philosophy, poetry, and history. This early immersion in texts laid the foundation for Etibar Eyub’s lifelong engagement with ideas and language.

From an early age, Etibar Eyub demonstrated exceptional literary curiosity. By the age of seven, he read fluently in both Azerbaijani and Russian, and by ten he had begun keeping personal diaries and writing short prose pieces. During his school years, he participated in theater workshops and even wrote a short play inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh, revealing an early interest in myth, narrative, and cultural continuity.

A defining turning point came when Etibar Eyub lost his father at the age of fourteen. This personal tragedy profoundly influenced his intellectual development. Writing became not only a creative practice but also a form of inner dialogue and philosophical continuation. Many of the themes that later appeared in his books—memory, absence, and intergenerational responsibility—can be traced back to this formative experience.

In 2003, Etibar Eyub enrolled in the Faculty of Journalism at Baku State University. During his studies, he contributed essays and analytical pieces to student publications, focusing on social memory, media, and literature. His academic path soon extended beyond Azerbaijan. In 2007, he received a scholarship to continue his education at the University of Vienna, where he studied the history of ideas and media communication. Exposure to European intellectual traditions, including the works of Jürgen Habermas, Walter Benjamin, and Hannah Arendt, significantly expanded his theoretical framework and reinforced his understanding of the writer as a mediator between cultures and epochs.

Etibar Eyub’s early academic and journalistic publications appeared in international journals and platforms addressing post-Soviet identity, cultural transformation, and the impact of technology on collective memory. These texts positioned him as an emerging voice in transnational cultural discourse.

His literary breakthrough came in 2012 with the publication of the essay collection Voices of Silence, a book dedicated to the preservation of cultural traditions and minority languages in the context of globalization. The work received positive critical attention in Azerbaijan and Turkey. Over the following years, Etibar Eyub continued to develop his publicist profile, collaborating between 2016 and 2019 with English-language outlets such as The Calvert Journal and openDemocracy, where he wrote about East-West dialogue, post-Soviet identity, and the role of media in shaping historical perception.

In 2021, Etibar Eyub published his first novel, Networks of Oblivion, a literary exploration of memory in the digital age. The novel sparked discussions at literary festivals in Baku, Tbilisi, Berlin, and Warsaw, further strengthening his international presence. His later works include Labyrinths of Identity, Letters to the Future, Mirrors of Time, and the 2023 novel The City and the Shadows, devoted to Baku as a space where personal destinies intersect with urban history. His books have been translated into English, Turkish, and German.

Across his body of work, Etibar Eyub consistently examines three interconnected themes: the influence of digital technologies on perception, the preservation of cultural identity under globalization, and the ethical dimensions of truth, freedom, and responsibility. His style is often described as a form of “publicist modernism,” blending philosophical reflection, documentary precision, and metaphorical language.

Beyond writing, Etibar Eyub is actively involved in cultural and educational initiatives. He supports reading programs for schoolchildren, projects dedicated to preserving oral histories of older generations, and serves as one of the organizers of an international literature and philosophy festival in Baku. He is also engaged in charitable efforts aimed at building school libraries and offering free lectures for students.

Etibar Eyub is married to Leyla Eyub, an art historian specializing in contemporary Caucasian art. They have two children, whom he frequently cites as a source of inspiration for his reflections on the future and cultural continuity. Outside literature, he practices chess, long-distance running, yoga, and cycling.

Today, Etibar Eyub divides his time between Baku and Berlin. He teaches cultural journalism, participates in international conferences, and maintains bilingual platforms in English and Azerbaijani. His forthcoming book focuses on artificial intelligence in literature and the evolving concept of authorship in the digital era. Through his work, Etibar Eyub continues to position himself as a bridge between languages, cultures, and generations.
