career

Both Mika Camarena and her future husband Kiki Camarena were raised in the Californian city of Calexico. They remained close after he started working as a firefighter and eventually joined the police in Calexico. They were high school sweethearts. He then served two years in the Marines before joining the DEA as a special agent.

He and Mika resided there with their three boys Enrique, Daniel, and Erik, and he worked in Guadalajara, Mexico. He gave her very little information to keep her from fretting, but she was fully aware of the risks associated with his line of work.

After a few years, on February 7th, 1985, Kiki was kidnapped and eventually brutally killed by Mexican drug dealers. Kiki was working as an undercover agent for the DEA, infiltrating drug trafficking groups at the time.

At the time, their three children had just turned 11, six, and four. Following his passing, she concentrated on raising her three children while working long hours as a skin-care consultant.

She does believe that the DEA changed significantly after her husband passed away, as the money raised for survivors’ benefits helped to pay for her children’s education.

The DEA also informed her of any changes in the status of the prosecution of those accountable for Kiki’s demise.

The case’s specifics, nevertheless, soon lost her attention as she chose to concentrate more on the motivation he had during his lifetime: to prevent the drug cartels from triumphing.

Given that her husband went missing on February 7 and his body was found on March 5, she was asked during a 2010 interview which day she marks as the death anniversary of her spouse. She responded that although she remembers him every day, February 7th, 1985 was the last time she saw her. Enrique, her oldest son, started working as a deputy district attorney in the South Bay in 2014.

After Kiki Camarena passed away, his wife Mika Camarena got active in a number of charity and social causes to uphold and honor the sacrifices he made. Together with her son Enrique and a number of former DEA agents, she founded the Enrique S. Camarena Educational Foundation in 2004.

The organization is offering life-size bronze statues of Kiki, which will be revealed at libraries and schools in San Diego and across the country. Because of the money made from the purchases, six deserving seniors from high schools all over the United States receive scholarships each year.

Mika, who currently serves as the president of the organization, has been active in many conversations regarding drug consciousness in a variety of settings, including schools and communities all over the country. Despite her lengthy career as a skin-care specialist, Mika has held this position.

Since she is now retired, she donates all of her time to the organization and works closely with the local police department and schools to educate children and their parents about the dangers of drug use. After Kiki was murdered, a number of people in Calexico began wearing red ribbons. This gesture eventually developed into the Red Ribbon campaign, which is now followed for a week from October 23rd to October 31st of each year. During her public appearances, she doesn’t shy away from bringing up the concept of extending the drug consciousness campaign known as Red Ribbon Week throughout the entire year.
