Emery rose to prominence as a late-night disc jockey on Nashville’s WSM. Emery’s country music program could be heard throughout much of the Eastern and Central United States – and by many overnight long-haul truck drivers, who were frequently listeners of country music – due to the station’s clear-channel broadcasting range at night. The all-night performance was a haven for country music performers of all stripes, many of whom Emery knew personally.
He is credited with helping to shape the broadcasting style of NASCAR driver (and Kentucky native) Darrell Waltrip, who was a regular on his late-night radio program during his early days racing in Nashville. This ultimately led to fill-in work on WSM and Nashville Now. During numerous seasons, he would talk with a broad spectrum of country music singers from various periods, and he also utilized a Muppet-like ‘co-host,’ “Shotgun Red.” Emery tried a television return in 2001 with a program called Mornings with Ralph Emery on Nashville Fox station WZTV, but only lasted seven days before being sidelined, first by continued coverage of the September 11 attacks and subsequently by sickness. The program was renamed Tennessee Mornings after its new host, Charlie Chase. Emery created The Nashville Show, a free weekly webcast with Shotgun Red as co-host, in October 2005.
