It is very common with a lot of people not being able to memorize their phone number when they get their new MTN sim card. Infact, it will be hard for you to mention all your ten digits phone number in the first two days when you get your sim card active in your phone. MTN being aware of this possible challenge has made it possible for you to check your phone number any time and anywhere. Please read below for the guide.

What does the MTN number look like?

From the previous network name Areeba then to current MTN, there have been several prefixes to MTN’s numbers eg. the popular 024, 054 and now 055. Seeing any phone number starting with the examples given means the number is an MTN number. Now the MTN number for local calls should be 10 digits. Eg, 024 xxx xxxx, 054 xxx xxxx or 055 xxx xxxx. The first 3 digits indicates the network your number belongs to, Which in this case the example above is MTN.

How to check your MTN phone number

Checking your own MTN Sim/Phone number can be done in several ways. The process is either via USSD, Call and SMS which is quite easy and does not take much time.

Checking your own MTN number via USSD

1. Dail *156#

2. Select (1. Check My Number)

3. A pop up message will display ( Y’ello, your phone number is 233xxxxxxxxx)

Now, what you will need to do is take away the 233 and replace it with 0. Your number will then become 0xxxxxxxxx.

Checking your own MTN number via Call

Make a call from your unknown phone to another known number  which can be any network and your phone number will appear there.

Checking your own MTN number via SMS

Send a text message from your phone to another phone number and your unknown MTN number will display there.

How to receive a foreign call with your MTN number

Remember I mentioned earlier that the MTN number for local calls is 10 digits. Now, if you want to receive a call from abroad or in other words from another country, then it means you will have to add some more digits which is known as the country code. Instead of the 0xx xxx xxxxx. Replace the 0 with 00233 or +233 to become 00233xx xxx xxxxx or +233xx xxx xxxxx.
